Just when you thought we'd shown retro love to every era worth mentioning, the 00s bounced back and gave us the most divisive revival yet. 20 years after its debut, Y2K fashion is back - and TikTok proves it. Between ultra-low waistlines and halterneck tops to lace-up details and snake print, feather trims and chainmail to diamantes and velour two-pieces - the good, the bad and the ugly (in a v good way) of 00s has returned. Let's deep dive into the OG icons and trends that made the decade.
Our forever muse, J Lo, is pictured here in one of the most (thanks to those pap images from Paris Hilton's 21st birthday party) defining trends of the 00s: chainmail. Slinky, shiny and basically everything we want a party piece to be - they make for an 'It' outfit perfect for every party and statement outfit moment.
Queen of the 00s, Paris Hilton, could be used to illustrate any one of the many trends associated with Y2K. We've chosen the one and only Juicy Couture tracksuit which is making a swift comeback (along with it's sheepskin-lined counterparts, UGGs - yes, really). Embrace the velour, there's plenty of it.
While we accept that not every sartorial decision Xtina made during the 00s was one we'd hurry to wear down the pub on a Friday night (chaps, anyone?) the lace-up trend is versatile and has a firm place in our wardrobes in 2022. Go true 2000s in some lace-up trousers or opt for a lace-up top with cut-out details come summer, there's something for everyone.
If Britney wore it in the late 90s or early 00s, we wanted it. And the same goes now for this lace-up top and snakeskin trouser pairing. If the low-rise thing isn't your fave, don't stress, you can still pay homage to the trend with your go-to trouser cut or snakeskin accessories.
Cast your minds back to a time before high-waisted jeans were the cut du jour and you'll eventually reach the multitude of Y2K music videos filled to the brim with low-rise-everything. Destiny's Child were but one and our favourite trio worked it like pros with bikini and handkerchief tops for optimum effect.
If there ever was a woman to help us channel our main character energy, it's Elle Woods. Rose tinted glass and sequin bikini tops were but a day in the life of our best-loved heroine, but it's the feathery jacket that speaks volumes in 00s language. But why stick to jackets? We'll take them on everything please.
Most people think the journey to a more sustainable wardrobe starts with buying more sustainable fashion BUT we are here to tell you there is in fact an even better (and cheaper) beginning to that journey. Take a look below for some storage and care hacks that will extend the life of your clothes, show them the love they deserve and cut down on new purchases.
