How To Layer, According to a Scandi Style Star
How to layer up fashion pieces like a Scandi? We asked Nnenna Echem for her expert styling tips and tricks so you can rewear your favourite pieces all year long. Nnenna Echem is an Oslo-based fashion contributor and style star known for her love of colour-blocking and pattern clashing. You might recognise her as our Copenhagen Fashion Week correspondent, or from Instagram where she wears a mix of the coolest cult brands and her own unique pieces. She’s a master stylist when it comes to layering pieces we didn’t actually know could go together so we thought we’d ask her how she does it.
What are your top tips for layering different prints together?
The thing here is just to go for it. I remember when I first started to experiment with patterns, and I thought it was awful to see leo print and zebra together, but now I think it works. If the prints in your outfit doesn’t match or connect in some type of way, you have to make sure that the colours that you’re wearing does.
Are there certain pieces that are better for layering?
Yes, I think that blazers, turtlenecks, vests and cardigans are pieces that are better for layering.
How to do you restyle something that has a bold colour or print?
I’ve never had a problem with restyling a piece that has bold colour or prints. By now I have figured out which colours goes together so it’s easier for me to restyle an outfit.
In colder weather, how do you keep your outfits looking so fun and exciting?
All my winter coats are colourful, so it’s easy to put together a fun outfit. I honestly do not own a lot of black/white/grey pieces of clothing, and that’s a choice that I’ve made. If your closet is full of colourful clothes that’s what you’ll wear. It’s all about the choices you make when you buy a piece of clothing. Mostly people will go for the black blazer or the black turtleneck. I on the other hand will go for the orange blazer or the green turtleneck.
What’s a new layering trick you’ve learned this season?
It’s not really a layering trick, but this season big collars are in, and I love tucking the collar outside of my coat/blazer or vest.
How do you make summer pieces work in the winter months?
If I’m wearing a summer dress I often style them with pants (trousers), which usually works pretty well or you could also style a dress with a turtleneck underneath.
