Describe your SS20 collection in one sentence.
“Soon We Will Be Strangers” is a classic British youth rebellion breakout story premised on a young girl from anywhere England.
What was the inspiration behind it?
A Keats poem called Ode to Melancholy: “SUDDEN FROM HEAVEN LIKE A WEEPING CLOUD, THAT FOSTERS THE DROOP-HEADED FLOWERS ALL, AND HIDES THE GREEN HILL IN AN APRIL SHROUD; THEN GLUT THY SORROW ON A MORNING ROSE, OR ON THE RAINBOW OF THE SALT SAND-WAVE, OR ON THE WEALTH OF GLOBED PEONIES .”
Do you have a must-rent piece from the collection?
For this time of year the Audley dress is the ideal everyday statement piece.
Describe your design process.
What went into creating your collection from start to finish? It starts with the fabrics mood-boards and sketches—they each inform each other’s capabilities and limitations. From there we go into patterns and calico fabrics (a sack like cloth we use to see the initial design come to life). We make any changes and then it’s ready to go into fabric. I’m probably oversimplifying but a lot of it is thought process too - it’s almost like a puzzle with lots of random parts that eventually join to make a whole.
Now tell us a bit about you and your background.
I’m born and raised in London of Georgian Jewish descent. I studied fashion at Parsons in New York and worked in the industry there until starting my own brand.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Factory floor appropriate most days but aspire to be a ‘Deborah Lyons’ woman every day.
What’s your go-to work outfit?
It ranges from sweatpants to the pink Saskia trousers depending on where I’m going and who I’m seeing. Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m hugely OCD and obsessively into grooming so you’ll usually find me with shiny hair smelling good but otherwise looking a mess with threads stuck to me in various places.
Who's been the most memorable person to wear Deborah Lyons and why?
Actually every girl who’s worn out product has been incredibly special to us. We love to see how different girls apply their personal styles to the pieces and it makes us so happy when we know someone has chosen to wear DL as a reflection on their individuality.
