Why Modest Fashion Is The Trend Of 2018
From Victoria Beckham to Zimmermann, 2018 has seen the return of modest dressing – so is covering up back in fashion?
What is modest fashion?
Whilst difficult to define, modest fashion is all about looking stylish whilst remaining relatively covered. This year we’ve seen catwalks and models alike opting for higher necklines, creative layering and loosely fitting shapes. The trend can be interpreted differently, with fashion designer Hana Tajima commenting:
“The reality is that everyone has their own idea of what modest fashion means to them. And that runs alongside peoples’ personal preferences of colour and style. It’s such a broad idea that gets very narrow inside those two words’.
The Modist, which launched in early 2017, was born from “a gap in the market for fashionable, modern pieces for both every day and special occasions”, that ranges from capsule essentials to statement pieces that are curated for the modest shopper. Stocking brands from Mary Katrantzou to Christopher Kane, founder Ghizlan Guenez commented:
“If you think of many arbiters of style you find that they are often dressed modestly—women like Queen Rania of Jordan and Jenna Lyons. I believe that as women we have come of age and understood that empowerment is not about baring all nor is it about covering all, it’s about exercising your choice.“
So what one person may deem flashy, to another may seem more conservative. What’s important to note is that the term itself is subjective, and it’s important to be familiar with the practice of modest fashion.
So what we will be renting this season?
1. Maxi Dresses
Many modest dresses are characterised by long sleeves and long length.
2. Button-up Blouses
Perfect for the day-to-night transition that takes you from work to restaurant.
3. Layering Layers
It’s often fashionable amongst modest dressers to take a less conservative piece and layer it under or over a more basic item. Take the silk cami dress and chunky knit as one example of this trend.
4. Wide-Legged Trousers
A nod to the “comfort-first” fashion trend, tailored wide-legged trousers are one of this season’s hottest trends.
